Gunnells seeks justice probe into three Aiken elections

Sex Education Topics Excluded by County Committee

Aiken County Comprehensive Health Advisory Committee reviewed the state curriculum for fifth grade sex education and ruled that masturbation and nocturnal emissions will not be taught unless students ask. The panel stated teachers would only discuss these topics if prompted, and materials do not mention them.

Campbell Seen As Possible Commerce Chief Candidate

Washington reports Campbell, governor of South Carolina, a Bush regional coordinator, spoke at the National Press Club and denied seeking a Commerce Department job while noting his South campaign work. He did meet with Lee Atwater, though not the transition team. Campbell praised campaign challenges across southern states.

Trade Deficit Narrows as Exports Reach Record High

The Commerce Department reported September goods deficit dropped to 10.5 billion while exports rose to a record level. Imports eased from August’s 39.8 billion, narrowing the year’s pattern of widening gaps. Analysts note the nine month deficit trends at an annual rate of 137.2 billion.

U.S. Trade Balance Shifts as Exports Rise in September

The Commerce Department reports a 2.2 percent rise in September exports to a record 28.2 billion, led by autos data processing office equipment and chemicals. Airplane and telecom machinery exports fell from August. U.S. imports of manufactured goods and oil declined by about 1.0 billion. The year’s trade balance reached 170.3 billion last year and 155.1 billion in 1986.

Reagan Approves Memorial For Vietnam Era Servicewomen

President Reagan signed legislation authorizing a statue of a servicewoman at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington. Diane Carlson Evans, founder of the Vietnam Women's Memorial Project, said the project has raised $700,000 of the $13 million goal and will be funded privately.
