SRS Picked as Site for Three Disposition Facilities
The Energy Department releases a final EIS naming the Savannah River Site as the preferred location to build three facilities for disposing of about 50 metric tons of surplus plutonium. About 17 metric tons will be immobilized in ceramic form with high level waste glass and 33 metric tons will become MOX fuel for commercial reactors. The plan covers siting construction operation and decommissioning of these facilities.

Confederate burials honor fallen soldiers at Charleston
