The Aiken Standard hosts an open house from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 124 Rutland Drive opposite Aiken High School and the adjacent elementary school. Tour attendees will see one of the world’s most modern publishing plants with new computerized equipment.
Post office authorities report the Saturday armed robbery of Montreal's main post office grossed over 600000 in loot. Banks that had money sent by mail showed more than 100000 in cash to various Canadian institutions. The remainder consisted of old bills in canvas bags destined for destruction in Ottawa and negotiable stocks and bonds.
A moderately strong earthquake of magnitude 5.8 was recorded about 60 miles east of Amchitka in the Aleutians. The quake at 3 20 p m EST was felt near Adak Island 150 miles northeast, with potential damage if near a populated area. Authorities could not confirm if Amchitka felt the tremor.
President Nixon flew from Andrews Air Force Base at 5 22 p m EST to Florida for a weekend stay. He will confer with three Cabinet members including Melvin R Laird John N Mitchell and William P Rogers at the Biscayne Bay presidential compound.
Virginia Ann Love, manager of the cigar stand, had her car stolen from a lot near the Jackson County Courthouse. The vehicle was recovered after hundreds of miles driven, an empty gas tank, a $15 parking ticket, and tow charges appeared. She negotiates recovery with the city, insurer, and lot surety.
A 30-foot migrating whale veered left into San Francisco Bay on Wednesday and was later thought to be heading back toward the ocean. By Thursday night it had been seen as far as 30 miles up the bay and into the Sacramento River as experts expect saltwater to yield to saltier water near the ocean. In Clearwater, 11 year old Peggy Braxton was named Langley Bath Clearwater Elementary Homecoming Queen during Pee Wee football halftime festivities, escorted by her brother Norman.
An Aiken County jury awarded Robert L. Brown of Columbia 1,000 in actual damages and 6,000 in punitive damages in a suit against Satcher Motor Co. Inc. of Aiken. Brown testified he bought a supposedly new car in 1965 and faced a prior lien dispute with the Bank of Augusta. The five women and seven men deliberated about 90 minutes before the verdict.
The long delayed inquest into Mary Jo Kopechne’s death is pushed back further. Kennedys not available for comment immediately but previously expressed hope the inquest would be held soon.
North Vietnamese regulars struck from U Minh Forest and overwhelmed a govern ment amphibious force camp 138 miles southwest of Saigon, leaving 125 of 500 defenders killed or wounded. In the central highlands heavy fighting killed nine Americans and wounded 27 as enemy forces attacked two US bases. Rockets and mortars hit outposts on the Cambodian border killing three allies and wounding 15. A CBS camera crew member was among the wounded. President Nixon warned increased enemy activity could slow U.S. troop withdrawals.
The Aiken County United Fund campaign rose above 90 percent at the fourth weekly meeting at Easter Seal Center. Campaign chair Conrad Hartzog urged completion of solicitations by next Friday as pledges totaled 235 231 toward a 261 169 goal, with 25 938 remaining. Industrial II led by Bill Burriss and Mac McGuire and Educational Division led by Dr. G T Myers have met their quotas.
Egyptian commander raids cross the Suez Canal escalate as Israeli forces report losses while denying casualties. Nasser vows Arabs have no alternative but to wage the battle of destiny against Israel in a public speech after a month of illness.
E McCord Mulock Jr. was announced as advertising director of the Aiken Standard. A Princeton graduate, his career includes roles at Campbell Ewald Grant McCann Erickson and Young and Rubicam before moving to Aiken as vice president of McElwee Mulock Inc. He and his wife Harriett Knight live in Aiken with their two sons.
