Judge Julius J. Hoffman sentenced Black Panther leader Bobby Seale to four years in prison for contempt and declared a mistrial, separating him from seven co defendants in the 1968 Democratic National Convention riot case in Chicago.
S Harold McKee won the mayoral race in Maeser Utah by more than five to one. Voters also approved disincorporation by 289 to 20, directing town assets to the Maeser Water Improvement District and leaving the county to handle town business.
The Texas Supreme Court ruled the Sunday closing law constitutional in a 6-3 decision. The ruling upheld the prohibition on selling clothing, kitchen goods, appliances, hardware, jewelry, furniture and other items at discount houses on Saturdays and Sundays.
Miami Beach reported a record 53 degrees tying the date as millionaire matrons wore furs and surfers felt the chill. North Miami Beach registered 49 degrees, one degree cooler than Portland, Maine, marking unusually cold early morning conditions.
The first snow of the season dusted the Great Smokies and upper east Tennessee mountains. Amounts ranged from under an inch at Newfound Gap to two inches on Mt. LeConte where temperatures dropped to 17 degrees.
The House approved a measure 351 to 24 to end the 1956 exemption for one bank holding companies and bar them from non banking ventures such as insurance securities travel agencies equipment leasing and data processing outside banking operations. Senate action unlikely before next year. Rep Emanuel Celler and Rep W E Brock commented on potential upheaval and asset implications.
Headmaster H A Fletcher describes Aiken Preparatory School as a small traditional institution since 1916 now educating 29 day students and 46 boarders. The school blends old fashioned values with selective modernization including a new science lab and public speaking program while maintaining Latin and geography emphasis.
South Vietnamese infantry supported by American air and artillery fought two veteran North Vietnamese regiments in a ten-hour battle near Duc Lap on the Cambodian border. Government forces reported about 80 enemy killed while 24 South Vietnamese died and 38 wounded.
Rep Eldon Jones met about 40 members of Aiken Citizens For Improved Education in the county courthouse. He stressed local control and described a bill to define area advisory councils duties. The CFIE listed five problems led by taxes for maintenance, mobile classrooms, and bus costs amid HEW guidelines.
Egypt and Israel clashed across the Suez Canal as Cairo's press cited a new U S peace formula. Egyptian commandos reported a daring raid near Port Tawfiq while Israel reported casualties and missing soldiers. Al Ahram said the United States outlined the plan to Egyptian officials for mid November talks. The piece notes Lebanon conditions and a guerrilla withdrawal near Yanta amid broader Middle East tension.
Major General Raymond G. Davis told about 200 at a Paris Island Marine Band concert that Vietnam is a crucible of gallant service. He cited rapid school, hospital, and library development and noted high voter turnout and strong domestic support for the government.
Three American prisoners walked to a South Vietnamese militia outpost west of Tam Ky. Identified as Spec. 4 Willie A. Watkins James H Strickland and Pfc. Coy R. Tinsley they were listed in good condition at Long Binh Hospital and expected to return to the United States in a couple of days. They were part of the Americal Division operating south of Da Nang.
