Woman arraigned on drug charges after daughter reports cocaine use

A Beacon woman, Nancy O'Dell, 32, was arraigned on criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument and possession of a controlled substance after her 5-year-old daughter told a teacher she saw her mother use cocaine. The girl was placed in foster care and a $1,000 bond set. Beacon, about 60 miles north of New York City.

Boy Wins Case To Play With Girls In Volleyball

A Michigan hearing officer ruled the Traverse City School District violated anti discrimination laws by barring Jonathon Keenan from girls volleyball. The referee recommended $30,000 for mental and emotional distress and access for boys on girls teams or creation of boys teams. The Michigan Civil Rights Commission will review the decision next month.

Star Wars Talks Block Nuclear Arms Negotiations in Vienna

U S Secretary of State George P Shultz and Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard A Shevardnadze ended two days of talks in Vienna with sharp disagreement over Star Wars and arms reductions. Deputy's Misprision Charges Dismissed in Aiken Theft Case

Aiken County deputy sheriff Harold Merriett sees misprision charges dropped after a preliminary hearing as insufficient probable cause. Meanwhile Jane Butler, 31, remains free on $500 bond on grand larceny charges for stealing up to $64,000 in cash money orders and checks from Chief Magistrate Max Meek's office. Solicitor Robert J. Warner To Give Report On Sheriff Suit Status

Aiken County Council will hold a special meeting tonight at 7 p.m. to hear a press statement from its chair on litigation with the Sheriff's Department over separating operations at the communications center. Sheriff Carrol G. Heath filed civil action seeking to operate his department independently. The meeting is in the council chambers at 736 Rich Ave. W, Aiken.
