U S Senator Ernest Hollings won a fourth term with 63 percent of the vote to Henry McMaster’s 36 percent as 94 percent of precincts reported. Campbell won the governor’s race over Daniel by 51 to 48 percent, while Lieutenant Governor Theodore narrowly beat Hartnett, signaling a tight, polarized campaign and potential recount.
Election night produced close results across Aiken County with Irene K. Rudnick defeating Tom Woodruff Jr. for District 81, and Charles Sharpe narrowly retaining District 86. Fay Hatcher narrowly lost Seat 1, Rosemary English won Seat 6, Gene Duckett took Seat 5, and Willar Hightower Jr. won Seat 8, as voters changed local leadership.
