Final Reading Set For Tech Center Annexation

North Augusta City Council will hold final readings Monday for annexation of the 43 acre North Augusta Business and Technology Center at U S 1 and Martintown Road, the former drive in site. A 6 45 p m presentation by Savannah River Plant on an emergency response exercise precedes the 7 30 p m meeting in council chambers at City Hall. Open to the public, the agenda also includes second readings revising height limits and an animal control ordinance.

One Day Left To Take Delinquent Taxes Auction

One day remains for Aiken County property owners to pay delinquent 1983 taxes before property is sold at a Monday auction. Late payments include taxes and added penalties due by 10 a.m. at the Tax Collector’s Office on Richland Avenue. Bidding starts at the tax amount and ends with the highest bid in front of the County Courthouse. Proceeds fund county debts.

County Schools Close For Nov. 6 Election

Albert County public schools will close to students Monday and Tuesday for the November 6 general election. Meetings between parents and teachers are scheduled in schools Monday from 6:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.

Anderson Mother Killed While Holding Son In Lap

Angelette Rochelle Dillon, 27, Pelzer housewife, was shot once in the chest at close range as she sat in a chair at a neighbor’s mobile home, holding her 3-year-old son. The child suffered minor powder burns but was unharmed. Authorities said the shooting occurred shortly before 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Large Field Seeks Wins In School Board Races

In Aiken County races for the Board of Education many contests are straightforward while Seats 4 and 7 draw multiple candidates. Seat 1 features Chris Verenes vs. others for Aiken seat and Seat 9 holds incumbent Dr. Linda Clary. Verenes, 28, a Riegel Textile sales rep and former teacher, vows a progressive, excellence‑driven board and stronger private sector links while maintaining fiscal responsibility. Walter Moore, another longtime local, also runs in the contested slate.

Velma Barfield Executed in Raleigh for Murder

Velma Barfield, clad in pink pajamas, was executed by lethal injection at 2:15 a.m. in Raleigh for killing her boyfriend with poison. She expressed sorrow for the hurt caused and had offered organs for transplant, with her final day spent reading and receiving letters from supporters.

Playful hayride turns deadly for church youth in Aiken

Daniel Charles Snitker, 12, a seventh grader at Langley-Bath-Clearwater Middle School and member of Aiken Bible Church, died after a church hayride incident near New Bridge Road. He was described as quiet and full of grace by Rev. Chip Angell. The ride was Halloween entertainment.
