The Aiken Standard will publish Monday a guide to Tuesday's general election. Voters in Aiken County will find voting directions sample ballots and information on candidates for each office included in the guide.
Daniel Charles Snitker, 12, of Warrenville, died after slipping on the tongue of a moving hayride trailer during a church event. He was injured while attempting to board on New Bridge Road and died at Community Hospital. The boy was a Langley-Bath-Clearwater Middle School student and son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Snitker. In Halloween incidents nearby, an egg struck a man in Aiken Estates. two juveniles were taken to family court. Two suspects were later detained in a separate car crash case. North Augusta police reported tire slashing by three juveniles.
Aiken County property owners must pay late 1988 taxes by Monday at 10 a.m. at the Tax Collector's office on Richland Avenue or risk an auction. Unpaid real estate mobile homes boats and merchants inventories will be sold at a tax sale in front of the County Courthouse.

Incumbent Republican Ralph Cullinan, 71, seeks re election against Democrat William Russ Ferrara in the District 7 contest. Cullinan highlights dual taxation issues and drainage projects in south Aiken, proposes trimming service costs by consolidating county and city services, and notes plans to fund drainage improvements and indigent health care funding while upgrading unpaved roads.
Aiken County voters in District 8 face a race between principal and electrical engineer candidates. Incumbent Democrat William Clyburn backs his four years on the council while Republican Fred Cavanaugh attacks current spending and salary raises. Cavanaugh, 47, lives in Aiken and works in budget coordination at Savannah River Plant with a Virginia Military Institute engineering degree and 25 years at Du Pont. He cites jail repairs and council pay raises as examples of poor fiscal decisions and argues for using his financial experience in budgeting tax dollars. He opposes dual taxation as proposed.
Voters will decide three local referenda in Aiken County and six statewide constitutional amendments. Local changes include shifting to a council manager form, electing a council chairman, and authorizing up to three dollars per county resident for recreation funding shared with municipalities. Statewide measures cover disaster relief budgeting and creation of an estate court of appeals, among others to appear on the ballot.
Sheriff Ralph Gunnells and Frampton Toole III pull out of tonight's USC Aiken debate. Republican Carrol Heath and Tom Woodruff will attend. Club officials say Toole and Gunnells declined the format citing concerns about setup and potential name calling.
