William Kennedy Smith pleaded innocent to a rape charge at his arraignment in Palm Beach County Circuit Court. His lawyers filed for dismissal and a trial was scheduled for the week of August.
Eighty eight-year-old Sen. Strom Thurmond spoke to 1,200 attendees at Salt Lake City on the fourth annual Conference for Seniors. The Aiken City Council found funds in the current budget to offset a proposed seven mill tax increase keeping taxes flat next year. City Manager Steven T. Thompson said projected revenue will yield a $504,000 year end surplus, with about $350,000 available to cover losses if the millage rose from 90 to 97 mills. If projections hold, next year should be fine though a possible small shortfall could occur the year after, mitigated by growth.
Alex Molina Flores Enamorado, son of Oscar and… Enamorado, battled Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma after a dire diagnosis. He underwent bone marrow transplant in New York, recovered at home and school with help from teachers. He earned the Nathan Persky Memorial Award and a Meritorious Senior Award, then planned USC Aiken studies toward education or biology, grateful for family, friends, and community support.
In Columbia Olna a DOE hearing on the environmental impact statement for a proposed tritium production reactor continues today. Hearings, starting 6:30 at the National Guard Armory, hear public comments on three finalist sites Savannah River Site Idaho Falls Washington Hanford and a December decision date pending final EIS.
Sen. Ryan C. Shealy called two amendments to a Savannah River Site NPR support resolution a potential disaster. Both proposals sought a public vote on NPR or to delay construction, blocked in the House by tabling motions. He noted he may not seek re election in 1992 as he praised colleagues for defeating the amendments.
Washington reports that the Soviet Union seeks Western aid to reform its economy amid fears that failure to reform could unleash dangerous problems including control loosening over nuclear arsenals. Gorbachev’s envoy Primakov planned White House talks with President Bush as officials weigh inviting him to a July London G7 summit.
