In Berkeley a radiation alarm at a landfill traced Todine 131 in cat box filler from a garbage truck. Officials and veterinarian Charles Berger dismiss rumors of a radioactive cat at large insisting the trace likely came from lab work or rodent studies.
President Bush voiced cautious optimism about aiding the Soviet Union after meetings with Mikhail Gorbachev's envoy Yevgeny Primakov. Bush said he is impressed by Gorbachev's reform blueprint but would not commit to billions in aid or broad trade concessions.
A severe thunderstorm moved through central Aiken causing flooded roads scattered power outages and a snapped power pole near Peticoat Junction. No major damage or injuries were reported as utilities repaired outages and forecasts warned of possible additional storms tonight. Sweltering heat across sixteen states and Washington DC boosted ice and fan sales as records fell in Virginia Pennsylvania and Washington.
Residents from across South Carolina filled Columbia for the final day of hearings on the draft Environmental Impact Statement for the New Production Reactor. Gov. Campbell and other leaders spoke as environmental and reactor advocates and opponents packed the auditorium in a tense, closely watched session.
The Aiken Preparatory School board approved transferring 270 acres of campus land to Hitchcock Woods and selling 198 acres to the Aiken County Open Land Trust to bolster endowment funds. Ronald D. Royal said the moves will strengthen finances while preserving the woods, with 40 acres set aside for future expansion and 20 for possible development.
