In Columbia the South Carolina Senate 26 3 overrode Gov John C West veto of a bill creating a medical examiner system for Charleston County. The House then followed with a 76 8 override, completing the action.
Three young Japanese terrorists hired by a Palestine guerrilla movement staged a massacre at Israel's international airport. They killed 25 people and wounded over 70 in the passenger terminal. The attackers disembarked from a Paris Rome Tel Aviv flight, fired on travelers and bystanders, damaged planes, and one blew himself up. A second attacker was killed by his comrades, and the third was captured alive after a failed plane blast.
U S Navy fighter bombers used television guided bombs to isolate Vinh a major coastal city between Hanoi and the DMZ. They reported destroying railroad tracks bridges and damaging a highway bridge to the city while fronts remained quiet except Kontum where B52s hammered North Vietnamese positions.
The North Vietnamese offensive appears to delay the Army's new chief of staff designation. Pentagon sources say the unusual delay supports the theory that Gen. Creighton W. Abrams will succeed Gen. William C. Westmoreland once the fighting in South Vietnam is resolved.
