Republican candidates for the state legislature were granted a five day delay of the June 3 filing deadline for party nominations by U S District Judge Robert W Hemphill.
Cloudy showers persist in the Aiken area through Friday with 40 percent rain today rising to 70 percent tomorrow. Tonight’s low mid to upper 60s and tomorrow’s high about 80s. In Rock Hill a federal judge granted the Republican delay motion on the June 27 primary filing deadline and extended it to June 8. Kenneth Powell says a three judge panel may hear to separate nominating conventions from primary deadlines if allowed.
The 83 year old Barnwell County senator Ed gar Allen Brown announces he will not seek re election after nearly 50 years in public service. He says he could win but will retire due to doctors advice and after a lifetime of work from court stenographer to Clemson University trustee. Brown reflects on a long career and the decision to step down despite support from constituents.
President Nixon landed in Tehran for an overnight outing with Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and Empress Farah to discuss regional and world matters. The Nixons, greeted at Mehrabad Airport after a Kiev stop, faced heavy security as urban guerrilla threats circulated on Baghdad broadcasts.
American planes bombed a major rail yard near Hai Phong leaving it in explosions and flames. The raid damaged 16 bridges nationwide and one Marine jet was shot down but the crew were rescued at sea. North Vietnamese troops began a withdrawal from South Vietnam into Cambodia after two months of fighting.
Arthur H. Bremer, 21, Milwaukee, pleaded innocent to state charges tied to the shooting of Gov. George C. Wallace and the wounding of three others. He was escorted under guard to Prince Georges County Circuit Court after being extradited from Baltimore County Jail. He had already pleaded innocent to federal charges.
The Supreme Court unanimously declined to hear California's appeal challenging a state supreme court ruling that outlawed the death penalty. The court gave no reason for not adding the case to its docket as it considers broader penalties nationwide.
Army Corps of Engineers officials maintain the dam collapse that killed at least 118 people was doomed from the start. A Senate subcommittee begins hearings today on the disaster.
State Rep Zach Fulmer joins incumbents filing to seek a third term in the House for seat No 2 alongside Rep Marshall Cain who filed for seat No 1 in Aiken County. Fulmer praised the delegation for hospital plans and county progress in technical education.

Aiken County sheriff's deputies investigate a shotgun blast into Jesse Brown's Pine Log Rd home in Aiken at 11 53 p m Sunday with no injuries reported. A 1964 Ford with Georgia plates fled the scene after two black males swiped a pistol from Lee's Department Store but dropped it outside. Police say a burglary alarm at Aiken Sporting Goods Store on Laurens St alerted officers. front glass was damaged but no entry occurred.
Deputy Andy Seigler said last week five people faced charges of marijuana possession with intent to distribute. Michael Gosline Norman Belcher and Stephen Flowers were arrested Monday near Reynolds Pond Road after a search warrant at a nearby house revealed a marijuana patch. Wayne Harold Smith and David Beynton Smith were arrested Thursday on similar charges at a Highway 19 location. Officers found a large quantity of marijuana on a table and a nearby greenhouse with 150 to 200 plants.
