Lamplighter Apartments Planned for Crosland Park area

A 60 unit Lamplighter complex is proposed for five acres at the mouth of Crosland Park in Aiken pending a zoning change. Units include one two and three bedrooms with rents from 150 to 210 dollars and all electric amenities. Developer Clayton Hannon aims for flexible plans subject to city engineering standards and may include landscaping and leased furniture. Some residents oppose while others support the project as city council weighs approval.

Rain Expected In Aiken With Showers And Thunderstorms

The forecast for Aiken calls for cloudy, cool weather with a good chance of showers and thunderstorms today and tomorrow. Lows in the 60s tonight, highs in the 70s tomorrow, rain likelihood 50 percent today and tonight rising to 70 percent tomorrow. Winds northeast to east 5 to 15 mph today, turning easterly to southeasterly and gusty 10 to 15 mph tomorrow.

Two Minor Accidents Reported in Aiken Weekend

No traffic fatalities occurred in Aiken over the weekend. Two minor crashes caused about 500 dollars in damage each: at Hampton and Laurens Street when Adelaide H. Compton of Aiken failed to yield on a left turn into Susie S. Phillip's car, and at US 1 and Richland Avenue in a rear end collision involving Virginia Carey of New York and Shelia R. Snow of Aiken. Police logged 41 miscellaneous arrests and 27 traffic arrests.

Incumbents Qualify For House and Senate Races

The South Carolina GOP races unfold as officials prepare a nominating convention in Columbia while federal judges decide a petition seeking a stay on a June 27 primary filing deadline. Incumbents McMillan Cain Laughlin and others file or plan to file with Laughlin likely seeking re election. Aiken politicians report Dunbark not running for re election as he pursues the sheriff seat. Williams and Fulmer have yet to file though Fulmer is expected to this week.

North Augusta Police report 15 arrests over weekend

North Augusta Police Department logged 86 calls and 4 complaints over the weekend. Chief Walter Newman said most arrests were traffic violations but also included a brownbagging violation and disorderly conduct. Five minor accidents were reported.

Cain And McMillan File For House Senate Seats

Rep. Marshall Cain and Sen. Gilbert McMillan, both Aiken Republicans, filed for the Republican primary on June 27. Cain seeks a third term and McMillan his second, the first filings since noon today under a new primary date law. McMillan, 54, a retired Du Pont supervisor, serves District 8 covering Aiken and four other counties.
