Eight to be laid to rest in pauper service
Aiken County residents whose remains were unclaimed or lacked funds will be interred Friday in a pauper burial service at 10 am. The service honors those who died without family or friends to claim their remains. Coroner Tim Carton notes these individuals often faced financial hardship or outlived relatives. Cremated remains include William Collins, 64, Robert Everson, 62, David Mille, 78, Michael Cater, 48, Les Brown, 62, James Clark, 78, John Gastafson, 4, and Chad Dor, 33. The ceremony, led by a priest, will feature bagpipes and prayers. The county works to locate next of kin and secure authorization for final arrangements. Donations support the service, with churches and local businesses contributing flowers and burial supplies. Teddy Kulmala covers the story for the Aiken Standard.
