Local crimes report from May 1998 incidents
Police note a string of thefts and assaults across several roads. Items stolen include cigarettes and electronics from a car on Durden Road, burglary items on Boggy Gut Road, and farm equipment on Cordlewood Road. An intoxicated intruder was cut while attempting entry on Car Colina Springs Road. A 23-year-old woman injured a man on Whispering Pines Road. Japanese culture comes alive in Aiken classroom visit
Bridgestone Firestone worker Aoki and his wife spent over 30 minutes teaching origami and basic Japanese writing at Aiken Elementary. Students enjoyed learning from a native and the International Committee of the Aiken Junior Woman's Club organized the exchange to foster cross cultural understanding.

Former Aiken lawyer in Whitlaw suit faces appeal
Whitlaw remains among about 20 defendants in a Harte filed suit. Harte accuses Whitlaw of financing a frivolous case. Other defendants include Eldon M. Berry and Hank Rowland. The $5 million sewer project collapsed four years ago, with Randy Shaw charged by federal and state authorities for embezzlement and mail fraud. He served two years, then moved to a halfway house and later worked in Macon.
