Seven directors of the financially strapped Margaret J. West on Medical Center have resigned. Interim director Michelle Marrs confirmed the move, effective May 31. Resignees include Larry Gran Gail Dotson Rhett Winters Oscar Kemp Arthur Griffin Kenneth Sannes and Lauminia Nivens.
Aiken sees about 1800 homes and businesses lose power Tuesday after a switch failed on a pole near I 20. West side affected along University Parkway, Hampton Avenue and Rutland Drive. Repairs began, one circuit up in 10 minutes, other in 20. Re routing and further work expected not to affect service.

Unseasonably hot, dry weather is shortening the local strawberry season. Bell Strawberry Farms owner William Bell says harvests are earlier and sweeter berries remain only with morning or late afternoon picking. Hiram Johnson at Berry Plantation notes vines struggle without rain and warns the season may end soon. Bell farms operate 8 am to 7 pm Monday through Saturday on S.C. 23 between Ward and Johnston, with a North Augusta location also 8 am to 7 pm Monday through Saturday and 1 to 6:30 pm Sunday.

Aiken residents George and Brenda Anderson staked out and chased burglars after a break-in on Barnwell Avenue. They helped police recover most stolen items including a coin collection, television, radios, jewelry and shoes, and learned by Tuesday their insurance did not cover the loss.
Local attorney Anderson and his wife, returning home, found two rings on the patio and followed voices in the woods. The couple, about 20 feet away, listened as three young men spoke near a stash point and moved a bag.
Senate leaders blocked the House language seeking a video gambling ban in the 49 billion budget. With five days left, the Senate saved the ban from passage, while Gov Beasley and supporters see no new restrictions likely this year. The court must decide whether video poker is an illegal lottery as debates end.
