NAACP leader calls Confederate flag a barrier in state
NAACP leaders in South Carolina urged removal of the Confederate flag from the State House grounds to be taken seriously in child education efforts. Nelson Rivers urged members to keep up agitation until the flag is gone. Critics accused lawmakers of hostility toward people of color as the number of public events drew attention to the issue. Patterson and Clyburn cited other engagements and did not attend the dinner.
