Edgefield County deputies, with state and federal help, seized almost 1,100 pounds of marijuana and arrested five men. Dozens of car bon packed bags totaling 480 units were hidden inside 23 fireplace mantels aboard an 18 wheeler. Suspects Hernandez Guererro Arjona Perez and Deleon face marijuana trafficking charges.
James Franklin Herrick, 36, of Anniston Alabama, died after his Jeep Cherokee collided with an 18 wheeler on Interstate 20. Authorities say he had held a suspended license since 1995 for a prior DUI and alcohol is expected to be a factor in the crash. Herrick was traveling west toward Augusta, then crossed the median toward Columbia before the fatal impact.
Obituary notice lists Jacob Andrews of Springfield Ronald Bevel of Summerton Josephine Couch of Grantevile Lucius Keadle of Salley and Gwendolyn Murphy of Youngsville North Carolina with no further details provided.
The Aiken 20/20 drive raised 3.414 million of a 3.5 million goal since September 1994. It engaged 214 area businesses and 300 volunteers to fund city projects like the Chamber of Commerce center Arts facility airport terminal and downtown streetscape. Last chair Paul Grefenstette called it successful and credited broad support.
