Overcrowding in Aiken County Special Ed Draws Board Support

Hollings Thurmond Push South Carolina Heritage Corridor

Senators Strom Thurmond and Ernest Hollings filed the South Carolina Heritage Corridor Act of 1995 to create a 600 mile route from the western Piedmont along the Savannah Valley to Augusta and Charleston. The plan spans 14 counties and 100 towns to boost tourism and economic development through South Carolina’s history and culture.

Center to receive 1.7 million in upgrades at SC welcome center

The South Carolina Welcome Center on I 20 near the Georgia line will gain 1.7 million dollars in improvements aimed at attracting tourists. Eagle Construction Co. of Newberry earned a 972000 contract for road and sidewalk work while Two State Construction Co. of Thomson Georgia received 819000 for renovations to the main building and facilities. Completion is targeted by the end of March 1996 as the state upgrades rest areas ahead of Atlanta's Olympic Games. A North Augusta center project adds 2800 square feet of restrooms and a new entry between buildings.
