The Commerce Department reports U S corporate profits up 5.6 billion in Q1 reaching a record 91.6 billion dollars at a seasonally adjusted annual rate.
Saigon AP reports a South Vietnamese relief column pushed within two and a half miles of An Loc, the besieged provincial capital 60 miles north of Saigon. The carrier Saratoga joined the battle for the first time in combat since 1956.
Aboard USS Newport News the Navy says ships are not ordered to intercept North Vietnamese shipping but to warn of mines in Tonkin Gulf harbors. Officers note vessels proceed at their own risk as mines are laid and removed, with at least one ship entering Haiphong since May 9.
A coalition of civil rights liberals and antibusing forces in Congress threaten to undo a compromise on an $18.5 billion higher education bill. They object to ant ibusing provisions added by conferees, with one side arguing they go too far and the other arguing they do not go far enough. The conference agreement was announced Wednesday.
Cairo orders the U S Embassy mission in Cairo and the Egyptian staff in Washington reduced by half in protest of American support for Israel. Each mission now has 20 members as President Sadat denounces continued Israeli aggression and occupation of Arab lands.
In Washington a Senate Judiciary subcommittee cleared a bill to curb handgun sales spurred by the attempted assassination of Alabama Governor George C. Wallace. The bill still unresolved details include which pistol types will be covered.
Vice President Spiro Agnew left Thailand for the United States after a two day visit and a side trip to South Vietnam. He said Saigon's prospects for withstanding the Communist offensive look good.
Sen. Strom Thurmond vowed to keep public appearances and not alter tactics despite warnings after the Maryland campus shooting attempt on Gov. George Wallace. He recalled his 1948 States Rights bid and noted shifts in security needs and Supreme Court actions affecting law enforcement and political campaigning.
The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with a chance of rain today and tonight. Tomorrow brings mostly cloudy conditions with showers or thundershowers likely. Rain chances are 40 percent today 30 percent tonight and 70 percent tomorrow. Temperatures will be low to mid 60s tonight and mid 70s tomorrow with extended showers and thundershowers into the weekend and highs in the low 80s with lows around 60.
The Aiken Post Office building on Park Avenue and Laurens Street remains without a successor as plans shift after the USPS became a private corporation. The General Services Administration still owns the building and leases it to the Postal Service at 36 300 per year while TEC seeks temporary space. The Postal Service now controls turnover of postal properties and TEC was denied use of the old facility as it awaits a new site on Highway 1.
The state attorney general orders North Augusta to appear in court June 20 to explain why it missed a deadline for curtailing raw sewage dumping into the Savannah River. Mayor Ray Walters says a warrant was served by the Aiken County Sheriff's Department.
The Standard Stumper adds $10 to the jackpot bringing the total to 450. Two contestants, Willie J. Tinsley of 547 Harry Sr and Dorothy Wells of Rt. 3 Box 295 both in Aiken, compete for a luxury Bermuda cruise.
Edward Ready, 52, of Stie feltown, was sentenced to 20 years after a 3 day trial in Aiken County for manslaughter in his son's shooting death. The jury had convict ed on the lesser charge though murder was indicted. Judge Ness praised public defenders and warned Ready’s case reflected a terrible famil y tragedy.
The SEC filed an 18 page complaint in Portland accusing about 50 Turner subsidiaries of operating a fraudulent promotional scheme and failing to register under federal securities laws. Earlier Orlando state charges followed against Glenn W Turner Enterprises founder.
Dr Kenneth N Owens obstetrician gynecologist and chief of staff at Aiken County Hospital was elected vice president of the SCMA. Dr Mack S Bonner chief anesthesiologist at Aiken and Edgefield hospitals was elected vice president of the SCAS. Both are long-time local medical leaders.
The Aiken Community Playhouse opens The Apple Tree tonight at 8 30 in the Junior High School Auditorium. Three one act musicals explore womanhood with Eve and a unique apple tree set, Barbara in a 5th century B C arena, and Elia a Cinderella like star by night. A formal Highland Park reception follows with special entertainment and tickets at the door.
City officials warn of court action as PCA imposes April 15 deadline to halt untreated sewage into the Savannah River. Walter says completion by April 1974 unlikely and warns of industrial impact if plan rejected. PCA and EPA seek county-wide, integrated sewage solution.
