North Vietnamese shells struck a U.S. Air Force transport at Kontum airfield killing seven Americans and wounding two. The assault also blew the Pleiku ammunition dump and damaged the Da Nang Hue highway as combat raged near Hue and Fire Base Bastogne with moderate South Vietnamese casualties reported.
John B. Connally quits as Treasury secretary after 16 turbulent months guiding wage price controls and the first dollar devaluation since 1934. President Nixon names George P. Schultz budget director and former Labor secretary to take the post, signaling no immediate shift in policy.
The West German Bundestag narrowly ratified Chancellor Willy Brandt's treaty with the Soviet Union. The vote totaled 248 for ratification, 10 against, with 238 abstentions.
House and Senate conferees reached a compromise on school busing delaying desegregation orders for 18 months. The agreement came near dawn after an all night bargaining session and cleared the path for final action on a $20 billion higher education bill.

AP reports Arthur H. Bremer, accused of gunning down Alabama Governor George C. Wallace, may have stalked him through three states before Monday’s suburban rally shooting. Wallace security agents suspected him for repeatedly appearing at rallies but did not take direct action. Wallace’s condition improved. paralysis status remains unresolved until surgery clarifies spinal injury.

The Aiken County Sheriff reports two breakins in the valley area yesterday. The Bar-B-Que House on Highway 1 near Langley and the Gloverville Pellet Shop were hit, both calls logged at 9 10 a m. Thieves stole an undetermined amount of money from the Bar-B-Que House and $15 from a cracker machine at the Pellet Shop.
The Washington Post reported Wallace's gunshot severed his spinal cord with zero chance of walking again, while aides described him as in good spirits after winning Maryland and Michigan primaries. Campaign manager Charles Snider said Wallace understood he won both states and would continue.
