Alex Birt goes on trial in Aiken General Sessions Court on charges of housebreaking and larceny regarding a Jan 10 break in at Judy's Liquor Store. Three Aiken High School students received probation after pleading to assault and battery in the Dec 4 bus incident.
An embargo on second through fourth class mail routed via Chicago affects 30 states due to a national rail strike. Postmaster Henry W. McGee announced it, briefly rescinded it, then reimposed it. Excluded states include Alabama Arkansas Illinois Indiana Iowa Kentucky Michigan Minnesota Mississippi Missouri Ohio North Dakota South Dakota Tennessee Wisconsin Kansas Oklahoma Nebraska Pennsylvania and New York.

Forest Service officials say the Boundary Waters blaze in Superior National Forest near Ely Minnesota remained at 23 square miles and should be under control today. About 550 firefighters worked the fire since Friday with 200 sent home Monday night as conditions eased and a half inch of rain aided suppression. Damage and firefighting costs approached $1 million. officials suspect the fire was man caused but have not determined the exact cause.

William R. Pierce Jr., 39, is charged with the December 22 slaying of Kathy Jo Anderson 17 of West Columbia, bringing his total to seven murders. He is detained in Baxley Georgia on warrants for four Georgia killings and two South Carolina girl deaths. Anderson's car was found abandoned near West Columbia and her body later located in a woods. Previously Pierce faced charges in the deaths of Ann Goodwin 19 in North Augusta and Margaret Cuttino 13 in Sumter. Lexington County Sheriff Carroll W Day said the warrant is issued for Anderson's death.

The five were to be given a hearing in Augusta today. deputies did not identify them.
