Three guilty pleas marked the start of the third week of Aiken County General Sessions Court with Judge Julius B. Ness presiding. Two pleas were for housebreaking and larceny and one for driving under the influence.

New York stocks opened lower with declines outnumbering advances about 2 to 1 on the Big Board. Dow dipped 0.28 to 936.06 as volume reached 16.4 million shares and the American Exchange index fell 0.04 to 26.15 on 4.8 million shares.
Bill Parker operates a worm farming venture in Bunker Hill West Virginia. With 600000 worms grown from an initial 50000, Parker buys 1000 breeding worms for about 15 dollars and plans to sell bait to anglers at 35 cents per dozen and to other dealers at 15 to 18 dollars per thousand. Mrs Parker notes rapid multiplication under favorable conditions.
Siskiyou County supervisors dug beneath the Eureka courthouse to assess a new storage space and found paydirt. George Wacker panned the sample and reported a "quite a string of gold" worth about 1000 dollars beneath the building.

Carl Woodle executive director of the South Carolina Nursing Home Association spoke to Rotary about nursing homes in Aiken County contributing about 600 000 annually to the county economy. He noted roughly 350 000 goes to salaries and cited 6 492 licensed beds statewide with 150 in Aiken County.
South Carolina teachers, via the SCEA Delegate Assembly, delayed sanctions against the state to October 1 after voting 264 to 55 against an immediate blacklisting. They had sought a $1,500 raise, with NEA support planned. Gov. John West expressed willingness for a fall special session if a study committee proposes a plan to raise pay toward the Southeast average.

The strike halted most trains hitting New York and New Jersey commuters, with Jersey Central offering limited service to Newark. Government mediation continued as unions and railroads faced wage disputes and nonwage differences.
The U S Postal Service defended recent postage hikes at an open hearing before the Postal Rate Commission. Officials argued the changes, the first since 1967 and now in effect, move pricing outside congressional control and affect surface and airmail rates.
Israeli analysts foresee a lull in negotiations with Egypt due to Cairo turmoil after President Sadat purged rivals. Washington may delay plans for a Sinai canal accord until Cairo stabilizes as Meir and Eban tour abroad. Cabinet heard briefings from Dayan and Yariv amid cautious Arab affairs judgments.
