The South Carolina Senate killed two proposals to raise the sales tax to seven cents from five to fund tax breaks and education, health care, and agency spending. Sen. Tommy Moore backed the plan as a budget proviso, but it failed 15 to 30 without a vote due to Senate rules.
During Operation Iraqi Freedom, United Defense in Aiken installed a TV in the plant cafeteria to show employees updates on the conflict. Manager Mike Eaton said the live war footage fostered pride as workers saw their parts enable the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. The Aiken plant makes four components for the M2A3 and M3A3 variants, including hatches shields and drive housings, before parts ship to York Pennsylvania for final assembly.
