Planter Civil War ship wreck believed found off Cape Romain
Archaeologists with the National Marine Sanctuary Program say they located a wreck off Cape Romain near Charleston believed to be the Planter, the Confederate ammunitions ship seized by slave Robert Smalls. The site lies about 15 feet under sand, with evidence tying it to the 1862 plan to seize the vessel and Smalls later piloting a Union ironclad. Bruce Terrell notes old maps and reports aided the identification.
