Oakwood School for exceptional children runs a rug hooking class making wall hangings and floor rugs. Profits split with students. the school funds a home economics kitchen. Over 100 rugs sold. designs include USC Gamecocks and Clemson Tigers. orders by special design available.
The Aiken County Board of Commissioners opened their meeting by examining revised department budgets trimmed by 305000. The preliminary budget stood at 5233292.44 dollars, up 1594355.09 from last year, and was returned to department heads for further revision.
Dry and warm weather is expected to prevail across Aiken County for the next two days with a chance of scattered showers on Thursday. Highs will be in the upper 80s today and near 90 tomorrow, with overnight lows in the mid 60s. The extended outlook shows scattered showers Thursday then rising to fair and warm conditions Friday and Saturday.
Aiken competitors led by Jim Hill won the Great Savannah River Raft Race with a 43 minute record in a 1 man kayak. Allen Hay, Roger Hudson and John MccMerty placed third in a three man canoe, beating the old 45 minute mark. In San Francisco the Zebra killings case grand jury reconvened with about 50 pickets outside City Hall protesting Mayor Alioto's handling. The hearing room and City Hall were heavily guarded as access was limited to those connected with the case.
Militant truck drivers protest high fuel costs and low speed limits with a walkout that began Monday. Initial participation appears limited as traffic on major highways runs near normal and no injuries are reported amid sporadic rock throwing. Markets and food processing centers report little disruption and no solid turnout figures are available.
Queen Elizabeth II named Dr. Donald Coggan the Archbishop of Canterbury succeeding Dr. Michael Ramsey. Ramsey retires November 15, Coggan, previously Archbishop of York, becomes spiritual head of the Church of England as the second-ranking prelate.
Harold V. Gleason, chairman and CEO of Franklin National Bank and Franklin New York Corp., said the bank’s foreign currency trading losses since March 31 could reach 14 to 39 million dollars before insurance recovery. The SEC suspended trading in Franklin New York securities until midnight tonight at the holding company’s request.
City of Aiken moves to sue M. L. McGee Construction and Southern Railway after Laurens Street bridge collapse. City Manager Windham cites a discovered contract stating the railroad must maintain railroad bridges and responsibility for repairs. Insurance for the defendants had disputed liability.
The Aiken City Council unanimously approved annexing Heritage Square a 25 acre planned shopping center at Pine Log Road and Highway 19 and authorized the mayor to sign an agreement with South Carolina Gas and Electric to install storm drainage beneath its main line. The panel also backed an actuated traffic signal for Boardman Road and Whiskey Road and awarded a beautification commendation to Jeane Hall.
County officials list preliminary budgets totaling 2 549 211 49 and plan informal budget review hearings in early June. Departments awaiting budget decisions include Purchasing and Accounting Veterans Affairs Aiken County Mental Health Center Library Higher Education Commission Aiken Technical School and Historical Commission with reports due May 27.
A North Augusta man was convicted on drug charges in General Sessions Court as the trial of another local youth continued. Chris LaMar McTier, 21, of 1007 James Sr., faced two drug counts tied to possession with street value estimates of 18 000 to 23 000. Masters, 25, pled guilty to multiple counts and received concurrent sentences totaling 11 years after drugs were seized from a Belvedere dump.
