The United States posted an 865 million dollar balance of payments surplus for the first quarter, constrained by higher foreign petroleum costs. Commerce Department data show imports of petroleum rising 72 percent to 4.6 billion while overall imports fell 19 percent from the prior quarter, dampening the surplus from 2.7 billion in Q4 of last year.
Washington AP Democrats plan fast action to raise oil industry taxes by several billion dollars. Reps William J. Green and Charles A. Vanik press for House Rules Committee votes on amendments to oil tax reform, opposing Ways and Means Committee’s approach under Chairman Wilbur D. Mills.
William L. Calley’s attorneys request that the government disclose all testimony heard by Army and congressional committees investigating the 1968 My Lai massacre. They seek access to the still secret Peers Report as part of Calley’s bid to overturn his conviction for slaying 22 South Vietnamese civilians. The motions were filed Tuesday in US District Court in Columbus, in front of Judge J. Robert Elliott.
White House shields the typists who transcribed President Nixon’s Watergate tapes amid fear of subpoenas. Sources say Nixon lawyers decided to resist questions about transcripts full of inaudible passages. James D. St Clair would not disclose names, citing no useful purpose. Gerald L. Warren referred questions to St Clair’s comment.
The Atomic Energy Commission said plutonium-238 leaked from a Miami University weapons factory in Miamisburg, Ohio, into a canal and two ponds near the Erie Canal. Preliminary tests show no health risk with no abnormal radioactivity in air, water, or vegetation around the lab site.
Associated Press reports Newark Mayor Kenneth A Gibson, first black mayor of a major northeastern city, won re election easily over Anthony Imperiale. Unofficial results show Gibson with 42313 votes to 33652 for Imperiale, with other candidates totaling 1548. Gibson urged Newark to reject race as a factor in choosing a mayor.
Aiken County residents are reminded the city landfill is illegal for county waste and that the county site is in Langley with signs in the valley area directing motorists. For directions call 593-5232 at Langley landfill.
The Aiken County Board of Commissioners fast tracked action to hire a county litter officer and approve five ordinances totaling 9 640.62 while setting policies on county vehicle use and future land use. A debate arose over to whom the litter officer would report, delaying the session briefly as the board discussed structure, with a 20 acre eastern county site eyed for a future landfill to reduce haul distances. The panel also approved forming a temporary Planning Commission to aid in selecting a permanent body.
James Edward Green of Aiken, 29, pleaded guilty to distributing heroin and was sentenced to nine years in prison. A companion, James Hankinson, remains a fugitive. The sale involved $20 of heroin outside Riverside Inn on Sept 13, 1973, with two packages of white powder confirmed as heroin by a state chemist. Green’s wife pledged to serve half his sentence. Judge Ness warned on the drug problem’s persistence and escalation.
The forecast shows cloudy skies with only about a 10 percent rain chance today and 20 percent tonight and Thursday. Temperatures rise to around 90 degrees today and tomorrow, followed by a drop to about 60 degrees at night.
Aiken County Board of Education discussed placing mobile homes on school property to reduce vandalism at last night's meeting. Reports were heard from Superintendent T A Willis and from the salary and evaluation committees.
Washington assistant mayor John Staggers will headline the second annual Aiken Chamber of Commerce Prayer Breakfast at Millbrook Baptist Church Gymnasium this Saturday. A Charleston native, he promotes the fellowship movement and acts as an ambassador for Christ to reconcile men with each other and with God. His prior roles include leading Indianapolis Model Cities Program and serving in Washington city offices. he taught sociology at Howard University from 1959 to 1965.
