McMillan says firing tied to race in lawsuit

Federal filings allege former New Ellenton police chief Van McMillan was fired for racial reasons after a 2001 hire. He names Mayor Jim Sutherland, Police Chief Hugh Ray, and officers Johnny Hamilton and Victor Hitt in a suit filed April 20 2006, citing racial harassment discrimination defamation and wrongful termination among others. The case notes McMillan was suspended in Feb 2004 amid a SLED probe and later released from the force.

Registration Deadline Looms for Aiken County Primary

Voters in Aiken County must register by noon Saturday to participate in the June 13 statewide primary. Elections director Stuart Bedenbaugh said offices at 916 Vaucluse Road will be open 9 a.m. to noon for last minute registrations. Voters choosing a primary must pick one party. party registration itself is not declared.
