Aiken Horse Show Opens Tomorrow in Hitchcock Woods

The annual Aiken Horse Show starts at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Hitchcock Woods with hunter classes and a children’s hunter division at 2 p.m. A family class and pair classes are added this year per show secretary Mrs. Hugh Fenwick. Spectators may drive to the show ring via the South entrance or park there and walk to the ring.

USC Aiken baseball coach Randy Warrick spoke at Tuesday's sports banquet after Jana De Hart wife of basketball coach Glen De Hart. Warrick, noting he has spoken at many events, said this was the first time he followed a pregnant woman who was seven months along.

Rescue in Kaolin Mud Ends with Alive Survivor and Fatality

Robbie Benjamin, 26, of Augusta was rescued after nearly four hours trapped up to his neck in kaolin mud at the Gem Lake construction site. James Norman Neutzling, 42, of Pomeroy, Ohio, died of asphyxia in the cave-in. Emergency crews from Aiken and volunteers braved dangerous conditions to shore up walls, divert sewerage flow, and pull Benjamin free as neighbors and workers watched.

Ann Taylor Named Outstanding Older American in Lower Savannah

Ann Taylor of Aiken was named Outstanding Older American of the Lower Savannah Region at a luncheon. A Wilmington native who has resided in Aiken 26 years, she is a registered nurse who helped establish the Aiken USO and served four years as its program director. She later started a home day care program for preschool children.

Voter Registration Deadline Approaches in Aiken County

The deadline for county residents to register for the June 12 primary is 5 p.m. Saturday. Those moving within the county must file a change of address 30 days before the election. The Voter Registration Office hours run 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Frances Pennington chairs the county board and notes the May 12 deadline for barrier free precinct voting.
