A morning fire on Riviera Road prompted firefighters to arrive as a man was found near a garage door close to the kitchen. Residents watched from doorways in pajamas while crews battled flames shooting from the roof and by 7:30 a.m. had control, continuing to extinguish hot spots around the garage and side deck.
Governor Hodges uses a 30 second ad charging DOE with breaking a promise not to dump plutonium in the state. The campaign argues shipments threaten security while supporters urge delays and new legislation to slow the plan. Stakeholders include Energy Secretary Abraham, Thurmond, and Rep Graham as political action intensifies.
Thurmond urges Congress to require DOE to set a schedule for constructing and operating a mixed oxide fuel fabrication facility. Lindsey Graham backs a federal timetable with a 1 million dollar daily fine if deadlines are missed. MOX supporters push using plutonium as energy fuel while critics warn of costs and favor burial in a permanent repo. Thurmond stresses defense program links to state economy and job security and says Abraham will consider the request thoughtfully.
