A 20 year old Aiken man Brian Edward Jackson died Monday after losing control of his Honda 750 on Two Notch Road. He passed two vehicles then skidded across the road before hitting bushes and stopping near Brandy roads. Investigators say speed and bike handling may have contributed though witnesses noted he was wobbling. The scene yielded two helmets, one in pieces, suggesting he may have been wearing head protection.
Justina Wilson fought a disease eroding her health for nearly two decades. After learning vast information from the Internet and adopting a do anything attitude, she conquered diabetes and is healthy today. Her diagnosis began about 20 years ago with dangerously high blood sugar.
In 1998 five point seven percent of SC adults or 163000 were diagnosed with diabetes and another equal number had undetected diabetes. The disease was the sixth leading cause of death in SC in 1997 with 1029 deaths and 3014 contributing. About 3834 adults in Aiken County had diabetes in 1998.
Bethlehem officials say a 36 day siege ends with 13 militants to be deported to Italy and 26 others moved to Gaza. Abdullah Daoud, Bethlehem head of Palestinian intelligence, says the group agrees to exile and transfer. Israeli forces prepared for end to the standoff.
Postal Service says the 16th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive will proceed on Saturday despite pipe bomb scares in the Midwest and West. Donna Ricks, USPS regional spokesman in Macon Georgia, says carriers will be cautious but expect strong donations to help hunger relief. FBI and ATF investigate incidents and search for a suspect as authorities note similar devices found in three Midwest states.
The Aiken Rotary Club awarded Roland H. Windham the Four Avenues of Service Citation for a lifetime of service as Aiken's city manager from 1963 to 1991. Bob Newburn noted Rotary awards span 162 countries in 580 districts and 30 140 clubs, recognizing achievement in club vocational community and international service.
