Man Escapes Jail Then Robs BayBank Teller Again

A 31 year old, Steven W. Bergeron, escaped Bristol County jail by scaling a wall and drain pipe. He then robbed the same BayBank branch and teller, who identified him from a March 25 holdup, as police hunted him Thursday. The teller complied with the demand for cash. amount undisclosed. Bergeron faced multiple jail terms and trials on three bank heist charges.

Cities Below Average In Per Capita Income

Washington AP reports seven South Carolina metro areas fall below the national per capita income average of 14 639 in 1986. Rock Hill in the Charlotte area reached 14 273, up 14.7 percent since 1984, while Charleston's metro rose from 10 187 to 11 288 between 1984 and 1986. The Commerce Department notes the largest income gains occurred in metro areas.

Nation's unemployment falls to 14-year low in April

The April unemployment rate dropped to 5.4 percent, the lowest since June 1974, with 606,000 people finding jobs. Unemployed fell to about 6.6 million, led by adult men, while adult women held at 4.8 percent. Payrolls rose 175,000 with gains in factory work, notably fabricated metal products and machinery, accounting for half of 45,000 new factory jobs.

DOE Official Vows Safety Priority for New Nuclear Reactor

A Department of Energy official, John J. Jicha, says the proposed production reactor for Savannah River Plant will be at least as safe as the nation’s 100 commercial reactors.
