In Louisville at Churchill Downs Friday, Winning Colors edged Forty Niner by a head to win the Kentucky Derby, becoming the third filly to take the race. Forty Niner and Risen Star followed in second and third as Winning Colors, trained by D Wayne Lukas, carried the 11th gate with Gary Stevens aboard.
In DANSK Poland AP report Solidarity leaders say management agreed in principle to pay raises of at least 538 a month, reinstate fired activists, and grant amnesty to about 1,000 strikers occupying Le nin shipyard. Szablewski says talks mark a big step forward as Walesa lauds early progress.
Engineers at Savannah River Plant continue review of the P Reactor after DOE ordered its shutdown on April 9 due to nonconforming seismic bracing in another unit. L Reactor was repaired and returned to service. P remains under scrutiny with delays blamed on Blume and Associates.
Paris reports outline an accord with Iran leading to the release of three Lebanese hostages. Iran pressured Hezbollah to free the captives while Paris denies paying ransom. Paris cites restoring diplomatic ties and a nuclear-energy dispute settlement totaling about 400 million dollars as part of the deal, with Iran seeking a further billion in interest.
