Weather, low prices hit Maine elver fishery
Maine elver fishermen report a slow start to the eight week season as cold springs and recovering foreign markets depress catch and prices. Elvers, Maine’s second valuable fishery after lobster, saw about 2900 pounds caught so far, with prices around 500 to 800 per pound and a quota of 11 749 pounds. Officials cite chilly rivers and renewed Asian and European demand as factors while Maine begins electronic swipe card reporting to enforce the quota.
