Grizzly Bears and Wolves Targeted in ESA Fight
Washington officials press for action as Congress moves to renew the Endangered Species Act targeting grizzly bears and grey wolves. The 8th Circuit barred Minnesota from a sport trapping plan for wolves, raising legal questions for Montana’s grizzly program and overall protections for threatened species nationwide. Wildlife officials say Minnesota aims for a yearly sport trapping of about 50 wolves from a population of 1,200 to 1,500, amid reports of illegal wolf killings estimated at 200 annually.
