Barney Clark, 62, the first person to receive a permanent artificial heart, died in Salt Lake City 112 days after the surgery. He succumbed to circulatory collapse from multi organ failure following a rapid decline and return to intensive care.
A 13-year-old bay gelding Grass Valley and a 4-year-old roan colt Perfect Cut race in the William K Laughlin Cup at Clark Field as part of the 17th Aiken Hunt Meet. Grass Valley, bred by Cyane’s line and owned by L Brisbin Jr of Aiken, has shown steadier, slower but reliable performance. Perfect Cut, trained by Bill Hirsch Jr, is a New York bred stakes runner with earnings around 85 000 to 95 000, using the event for a sharp work. Also entered is No Picnic, another local connection, as the field for the sanctioned fray grows.
A hearing set for April 18 at 10 a.m. in the Aiken County Court House will determine if the Willcox Hotel on Colleton Avenue should be demolished. Judge Rodney A. Peeples ordered Joseph M. Eways to show cause why he should not be found in violation of a Feb 17 court order and address unmet provisions, including fencing the property, securing ground level areas, and granting safety access for inspections after a July 16, 1982 suit accusing the hotel of fire and building code violations.
State officials join a legal action delaying the L-Reactor restart at SRP and jeopardizing a proposed new reactor. Melvin Sires notes Idaho and Washington pursue the project while South Carolina faces a $2 million Environmental Impact Statement demand. DOE blue ribbon panel recommended SRP for the new reactor, but no final site decision has been made.
Steve Hamm, South Carolina's consumer advocate, spoke in Belvedere about a 20 percent rate increase proposed by SCE&G under bond. He outlined unfair rate hikes, high salaries, advertising costs, and PSC refunds delays. He urged residents to push for action as Rep. Tom Huff arranged further town meetings.
