Prices Fall Across Goods as CPI Drops in 1983 Start

Gasoline and fuel oil prices led a 0.2 percent drop in the consumer price index last month marking only the second annual decline since 1965. Gasoline fell 6.7 percent while fuel oil dropped 4.7 percent leaving food and housing unchanged and medical costs up 0.8 percent.

Peach growers cautiously optimistic after late cold snap

In the Aiken area peach growers report little damage from a late cold event. Thelma Widener of a Rutland Drive orchard says blossoms look unscathed though frost remains a worry. An employee of DuBose & Son in Monetta agrees peaches were not damaged. Frost risk grows as blossoms develop, with a 1982 reference to a damaging April freeze in SC and Georgia.

Delinquent Tax Bills To Be Sent

Aiken County tax collector W H Boylston announced about 10 700 delinquent tax notices must be mailed within seven days to meet the March 31 deadline under state law He sought funds for extra office hours and registered mail costs The council approved the funding and ordered extra county workers to the Tax Office.

View At Hunt Meet Is Great

Aiken's third Triple Crown event, the Aiken Hunt Meet, features six races with purses totaling 20 500. Top trainers and riders from the national circuit will compete as the crowd expected reaches 6 500 to 8 500. The event at Clark Field marks the 17th renewal with a mix of flat and fenced races and a Park Police Mounted Unit performance.
