Downtown Aiken faces competition from malls and Augusta
Downtown Aiken struggles as shoppers move to shopping centers and nearby Augusta. Aiken County residents spent 45.2 million in Georgia in 1971 versus 30 million in 1969, while officials note a softening stance from downtown property owners toward rent hikes. The 1969 CBD study labeled CBD facilities old and obsolete with cluttered scenery and poor design, calling for dramatic changes. Tomorrow: program recommended in CBD study.
