The 2nd Annual Aiken Harness Races attracted a record crowd of about 4 500 and a full 10 race card. Forty two top trotting and pacing horses competed as Abraham Schultz pledged a donation matching receipts to the Cancer Society and promised the track will return next year to keep Aiken’s Triple Crown alive.
A Bal Harbor resident received a plaque of appreciation from the local Cancer unit as TV star Robert Carson lauded his notable assistance in the crusade to conquer cancer. Schultz’s horses won five of ten races amid MGM film crew and helicopter footage at the Aiken Harness track despite light rain.
Illinois voters head to the polls with Sen Ed Muskie pressing for big wins as he faces Eugene J McCarthy and Sen George McGovern in a key electoral push. The state awards 160 of 170 delegates with Daley organization influence looming in uncommitted districts.
Life magazine reported that U.S. Attorney Harry Steward of San Diego halted an investigation into alleged illegal political contributions funneled through a company tied to a friend of President Nixon. Steward was appointed by Nixon.
The Nixon administration unveiled a program to fund more than 1 million summer jobs for youths aged 14 to 21. The package includes over 319 million dollars in federal funds supporting about 734,400 positions and an additional 336,000 jobs via private industry backed programs through the Neighborhood Youth Corps the Federal Summer Jobs Employment Program for Youth the Public Employment Program and the Youth Conservation Corps.
President Nixon endorses a proposed constitutional amendment to guarantee women equal rights. In a letter to Senate GOP Leader Hugh Scott he says he supported the idea as a senator in 1951 and has continued to back it. Senate Majority Leader Mansfield expects a vote Wednesday or Thursday.
British Prime Minister Edward Heath and French President Georges Pompidou wrapped up a weekend summit near London in a cordial mood. They reported progress on economic issues while differences remained over the political framework of the enlarged European Economic Community and its secretariat. A October meeting of the 10 nations will decide the site and role of the secretariat.
A bombing in central Belfast destroyed a delivery truck on Donegal Street. Four people were killed including two police officers and 97 others were wounded as terrorists claimed the blast via a phone call misdirecting authorities to Church Street.

She sits among other delegates and alternates from the Third District with Jansen of Clemson and Shirley of Belton among the alternates. Additional at large delegates will be chosen at the Columbia state convention.
Energetic ninth graders at Aiken Day School lead a campaign to convert Laurens Street into a pedestrian mall with grass trees benches street cafes and an ice cream parlor They plan the project as a 1976 Declaration of Independence birthday celebration and have started petitions with support from Lt Gov Earle Morris and city officials.
EMILY HINDMAN reports that party primary filing deadlines in Aiken County are in flux due to court orders questioning reapportionment acts and a new county government bill. Republicans extended filing lines to mid April for all county offices, saying usual procedures no longer apply.
A trio of burglars was arrested at 2 18 am after an alarm at 308 Park Ave SE. Sgt RP Voight Officer CL Edwards and Officer William Parker surrounded the scene and captured the suspects as they fled toward a wall. Arrested were Van Tyler 17 of Williston Clarence Boston Brown Jr 19 of White Pond and Nathaniel R Hooper 20 of White Pond. They face breaking and entering charges with bonds set at 500. Public safety officials also reported weekend activity including 22 traffic arrests 11 complaints 27 miscellaneous cases and two fire calls.
J L Alley executive director of the Aiken United Fund will move to Martinsville Virginia to lead the United Fund of Martinsville and Henry County. The executive committee accepted his resignation effective April 30. A replacement search and a campaign budget increase from 238000 to 278000 were noted.
