Senate approves education checks and other bills in Columbia
The Senate Education Committee backed a bill requiring colleges with education programs to warn students that a criminal background can bar certification. The measure, tied to 35 credit hours, would flag such checks before admission to education training. It also notes violent crimes and drug offenses would block certification. A separate item would delay a standardized school start date, while another bill strengthens penalties and enforcement for DUI, lowering the legal BAC to 0.08 and enabling automatic suspensions and roadblocks.
