Aiken Electric wins national award for Solar Schools program
Aiken Electric Cooperative received the National Community Service Award from NRECA for the Green Power Solar Schools program at New Ellenton Middle School. The initiative, done with Santee Cooper and the Aiken County School Board, includes a 2 kW panel installed in 2007, an Internet monitoring system, and a nine week energy curriculum kit for sixth graders.

Man charged after armed threats and stabbing attempt
Joseph L. Collins, 25, faces two counts of assault with intent to kill, three counts of malicious injury, public drunkenness and carrying a concealed weapon after allegedly pulling a knife on a man, threatening to kill him, and chasing a second victim. A brick was thrown through a car windshield before both suspects fled. Collins was later arrested at a Waffle House. a knife was found in his pocket. Police identified him in a photo lineup. The incident occurred in North Augusta after an argument in a parking lot.

Aiken County School Board to Meet Tonight on Budget
The Aiken County Board of Education will meet at the district office at 7 p.m. for a workshop on the 2009 budget. Comptroller Tray Traxler notes the SC House approved a plan raising base student cost by 102 dollars per student, with limited ability to raise operating millage under CPI rules.
