Dome observatory rises in Aiken with community effort

Amateur astronomers and boosters from around Aiken complete Boyd Observatory, a silver dome near Boyd Pond Road on the ORA Savannah River Site complex. David Boyd will direct and train locals to use small scopes to view planets and variable stars, with asteroid searching a focus. Jim Metts built the dome and donated materials, joining SAS ORA leaders John Felak Stuart Roberts and Jim Cadieux along with student assistants Evan Doyle and Matt Baker.

Tobacco and health care shape a sprawling budget battle

Columbia lawmakers wrestle with 560 amendments as they scrutinize a 5.8 billion fiscal plan. An anticipated tobacco settlement amendment by Gov. Hodges failed 61 to 59. Hodges seeks 165 million in tobacco funds for farmers communities and health care. House leaders split tobacco money between communities dredging and renourishment projects. He urged farmers to pressure for a larger share while critics warn against earmarking tobacco money for nonhealth uses. Foundation withdraws request at Monetta school site

The Family Foundation of Hankock New York drops its variance request for a proposed special needs school on a 217 acre tract near Monetta. Planning officials say the public hearing was removed from the agenda due to construction plans including a gymnasium and auditorium triggering the parking-related hearing rule.

Trials parking remains same for 58th Aiken Trials

The Aiken Jaycees announce parking will stay unchanged for the 58th annual Aiken Trials. The event Saturday will take place at the Aiken Training Track off Two Notch Road with committee member Mike Fanning noting that almost everything mirrors last year.

Gaver Trophy renamed for SAS anniversary at Aiken Trials

The Gaver Trophy will be renamed the SAS 50th Anniversary Trophy during the Aiken Trials the first leg of the Aiken Triple Crown. The late John M. Gaver, a premier trainer and Greentree Stable pioneer, is honored for his decades of influence on Aiken’s equine scene and the Trials.

Dick Smith group to buy Triangle Chrysler sale set
