Spring amid hooves and blooming season signals the start of Aiken’s Triple Crown with the 58th Aiken Trials sponsored by the Aiken Jaycees. The event takes place Saturday at the Aiken Training Track off Two Notch Road, continuing a public tradition since 1942.
The Aiken Brewing Company celebrates its third anniversary with green beer and complimentary hors d oeuvres for St Patrick’s Day. Bogie the one man band performs upstairs around 8 30 p.m. Owner Karmalee Beavers expects a large crowd. Green beer planned with Irish dinners and desserts at local venues while Saint Patrick’s history is briefly noted.
Aiken County officials begin filing for the 2000 elections as noon March 30 deadline approaches. Incumbents and newcomers seek posts on the county council and in constitutional offices. primary battles set for June 13 with the general election on November 7.
Aiken Department of Public Safety imposes limits for the May 5 Lobster Races. Alcohol may be consumed only 7 to 11 pm inside restaurants, and outside areas alcohol is banned except in plastic cups. About 20 officers will patrol with three Alcohol Beverage Commission agents to boost safety and city image.
In South Carolina two senators split over the Confederate flag issue as they craft a joint plan. Sen. Glenn McConnell and Sen. Darrell Jackson demand a consultative path to remove the flag from the State House while seeking a broader accord. Governor Hodges backs a plan moving the flag to a monument honoring Wade Hampton.
The Dow gains 499.29 points fueling a two day surge that recovers over 40 percent of recent losses while Nasdaq rises 134.77. Analysts warn the rally may be a short term head fake amid mixed volume and continued volatility.
