Woodside annexation package reaches first reading

Aiken City Council moved two ordinances toward annexing 700 acres of Woodside Plantation in one step. One ordinance would grant a tax incentive for large tracts and allow rebates of unsold property taxes over three years, while the other sets development standards and an $8 per linear foot rebate over four years.

Batesburg Couple Arrested After Drug Investigation

A Batesburg pair Thomas Wayne Hallman and Melba Hallman were charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana after a two week ACSO Chapin Police joint investigation. Authorities seized over four pounds of marijuana and a cash amount from their Old Ninety Six Indian Trail Road home. Both are free on bond at the Aiken County Detention Center.

Two Aiken County Men Charged With Cocaine Trafficking

Maurice R. Frazier and Calvin S. Millhouse were arrested Wednesday by the Aiken County Sheriff's Office on cocaine trafficking charges stemming from an undercover operation at S.C. 19 and Interstate 20. The ACSO worked with the drug task force and SLED. Both are free on bond from the Aiken County Detention Center.

Miller credits luck for storied horse career in Aiken

Mack Miller the famed trainer spoke at the Rotary Club of Aiken about his long horse industry career. Born in Versailles Kentucky, he recalled racing history, time with Charles Engelhard and Paul Mellon, a World War II service, and meeting Queen Elizabeth II. Now retired, he splits time in Aiken near Clark Field, previously owned the Aiken Steeplechase Track, and sold it to Juce Duchossois and Jack Wetzel.

Aiken County Sheriff's Office seeks New Ellenton man Jason Smoot 20 for larceny forgery and financial identification fraud. Smoot allegedly cashed a forged check in December using his fingerprint.
