United Methodist Bishop Joseph Bethea, noted as the first Black bishop in his state, was found dead at his Columbia home Sunday at age 62. Funeral plans will be announced. he had led South Carolina Methodists since 1988 and served a second term. He is survived by daughter Josefa Bethea.
In Cherokee County near the York County line an Anderson man died and another was seriously injured in a two car crash. William Marlo Holland, 20, died at the scene from head injuries. Troy Stephen Kirby, 45, of Anderson, was stabilized at Upstate Carolina Medical Center in Gaffney and transferred to a Charlotte hospital.

Aiken County administrator Gateway Bill Shepherd voices optimism amid looming Savannah River Site layoffs as the 422 acre Savannah River Research Campus nears completion. The facility receives 1.25 million from the Commerce Department and a 3 million county bond to unite Westinghouse DOE experts with private inventors and researchers to foster technology and environmental work.
Shepherd leads Aiken County effort as two major groups sign leases at the Cooperative Research Center. The Advanced Analytical Center for Environmental Studies will take 60 000 square feet over three to five years, and Environmental Conversion Industries Inc a Georgia robotics firm. DOE offices will occupy first floor and Westinghouse on third floor forming a tech research nucleus and spinoffs.

The 53rd running of the Aiken Trials launches the Triple Crown season in Aiken with the opening on Saturday. Events at the Aiken Training Track draw top thoroughbreds. Jaycees back expanded infield parking and ticket options vary from infield VIP to general admission. The Aiken Hunt Meet and Harness Races follow on March 25 and April 1 respectively.
The 53rd Aiken Trials takes place Saturday March 18 at the Aiken Training Track. Tickets are $6 in advance or $8 at the gate with free admission for children under 12. General parking costs $5 in advance or $10 on race day.
Laura Ash ley Saum, crowned Miss Aiken County 1995 at Midland Valley High School, plans active service as county representative. The 21 year old Aiken native, daughter of Richard L. and Bree McKeller Saum, aims to help Special Olympics and disabled children while pursuing ultrasonography and future studies at the Medical College of Georgia.
A severe storm battered California causing at least 12 deaths over five days and flooding across the state. Bridges were washed out and sewage spills forced evacuations, with newborn girls' bodies washing ashore on beaches. Northern counties faced renewed rain and more displaced residents.
