A 43 year old Beech Island man died Friday night when thrown from an overturned car near Storm Branch Road. Michael C. Smith of Beech Island Avenue was identified by Deputy Coroner E L Rear den. The driver David E Rainey 36 of Atomic Road is hospitalized at the Medical College of Georgia trauma unit.
In Sumter two-year art and science programs exist side by side at USC Sumter and Central Carolina Technical College prompting House action. The Legislature considers study on program duplication and potential consolidation to save funds after an $11.9 million university budget cut. Rep. Hallman says regional tech schools near colleges show islands of separate programs may waste resources. Rep. Robinson argues consolidation could protect students from across the board cuts.
Sponsors of the Jumping Branch Farm inaugural horse trials report strong support as about 500 spectators attend. Julie Tepper, rider and trainer, says the event is their first nationally recognized meet and shows growth. About 165 horses from Pennsylvania Ohio and Florida competed and Olympic rider Dorothy Trapp participated. The event runs today 8 a.m. to 3 30 p.m. with free admission and directions via Montmorenci Road Fox Pond Road.
Laura Ashley Saum was named Miss Aiken County from a field of 11 contestants at Midland Valley High School. Five judges announced the winner as contenders waited on stage for the result during the Miss Aiken County Scholarship Pageant.
Volunteers at Langley Pond clear old stumps and debris to outline a future rowing course for 1996 Olympic training and broader events. Bobby Rutland notes the site could attract national and international attention, with about 2,000 stumps to be removed and help requested for chainsaw work. Landmark of Charleston will remove an old railroad trestle and land spur shortly.
Rep. Tom Huff said the House chose to curb video poker to protect property tax relief. He noted operators were profiting and the plan would save homeowners about 190 dollars annually, with 125 million slated for school operational millage across 91 districts. The $4.1 billion budget moves to the Senate as negotiations continued.
