Aiken Preparatory School marked its first International Day with students translating names into Arabic and visiting eight foreign exhibits including Japanese, Mexican, and Moroccan booths. Aiken County magistrate grants Adrienne Brown’s request to drop the December domestic violence charge against soul singer James Brown. Brown, 61, lives in Beech Island and seeks divorce, with spokesman noting proceedings continue. He remains on probation for aggravated assault and traffic offenses.
Columbia South Carolina Attorney General Charles Condon announces a policy change for private attorneys representing the state. Lawyers cannot represent the state if they or their firms are suing the state in another case, forcing a choice between state work or opposing it.
Weston Health Center in Horse Creek Valley faces doctor shortages as unproven charges of Medicare and Medicaid irregularities slow two replacement hires. Director Joe Thomas says HHS findings, while not affecting current patients, deter local applicants and prompt a state temporary replacement plan. A nationwide recruitment is underway.
Speaker Newt Gingrich endorsed a private sector built multi purpose reactor at Savannah River to burn plutonium produce energy and manufacture tritium for defense. He said the plan could save taxpayers about 2 million dollars and sustain national defense interests amid support from Senator Lindsey Graham.
Aiken County inmate John Jacob Munn Jr. awaiting murder trial was moved to the South Carolina State Hospital in Columbia for observation after two self harm attempts. He allegedly shot his estranged wife Deborah Arthurs Munn on Sept 30 and was captured in Oklahoma after a 10 day manhunt. Hospital staff saved him on both occasions and duration of observation was not disclosed.
South Carolina's First Lady Mary Wood Beasley visited Helping Hands in Aiken to deliver boxes of gifts and offer encouragement to children and staff. She emphasized that families are a priority and that the center has not been forgotten.
