Berkeley Split by Redistricting Draws Mixed Feelings
State Sen Rembert Dennis says Berkeley being cut between the 1st and 6th districts may bring two Congressmen and a silver lining though the plan splits his county. The three judge panel’s map shifts Berkeley plus Barnwell Allendale Newberry Union and Lee counties into new districts, not reducing Black voting strength by more than one percent.

South Carolina Hopes for a Black District in Redistricting
U.S. judges approve a provisional 1980–90 congressional map for South Carolina noting it may not satisfy a 30 percent black population but allows campaigns to begin. The ruling keeps the plan as a stopgap until the next census and permits further tweaks by the General Assembly.
