New Ellenton Fires Suspended Policeman

New Ellenton Police Officer Charles Freeman has been terminated by a 5 1 vote after an eight year tenure. Freeman refused to reveal sources or discuss a pending case, citing constitutional rights. The council suspended him on February 22 after charges of not discussing a case and other alleged issue findings. Citizens voiced objection to the firing but stayed silent at the meeting.

Beech Island Woman Dies After Wreck Injuries

A 22 year old Langley woman Nancy McDaniel Beard died at the scene after a collision while turning from S C 302 to S C 125. Tina M King 18 of Jackson drove the other car and was uninjured. Four passengers from Beard's car were treated and released. The incident is under investigation by Aiken County Coroner John C Stoll.

Aiken Trials Open With Education Focus For New Runners

Aiken Training Track hosts the 40th running of the Aiken Trials on Saturday with six races on a one mile dirt oval. The City of Aiken plans public hearings on zoning ordinance changes with first reading on April 12 and second reading on April 26. Williamson Named New Chairman of Aiken County School Board

Clifton Williamson was elected last night as chairman at the Consolidated School District of Aiken County during the annual reorganization meeting. The former vice chairman replaces Dr. Durward B. Pridgen as chairman, and Sally Bigger was elected by secret ballot.
