Nearly a quarter of state farmers are bankrupt or near bankruptcy amid drought, market losses, and rising costs. Tommy Laney operates 500 acres near Cheraw with four profitless years, while experts warn many will exit farming this year due to debt, subsidies, and a strong dollar eroding exports. The Cribb family, once $2.5 million in debt on 3,500 acres, began liquidating assets last year as foreclosures loom.
The council will give final reading to an amended unsafe buildings ordinance at 7 p.m. in the council building 736 Richland Ave. W. It limits who may petition for tearing down a building and faces opposition from some residents. The meeting also includes a resolution on indigent medical care funding impact and hearings on budget amendments including a $1,050 donation for breathalyzer gear and grants for emergency services.
